On October 19, 2023, I had the privilege of organizing and hosting a National Seminar at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, centered on the theme “Empowering and Integrating Sex Workers: A Path to Economic Growth and Social Progress.” The event featured distinguished guests, including Ms. Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, as the Chief Guest, and renowned activist Ms. Priti Patkar as the Guest of Honour. Esteemed participants such as Adv. Ravi Kant (Shakti Vahini), Ms. Lalitha Nayak (SPID), Mr. Sushil Gupta (SEWA Bharti), and Mr. Ashutosh Pande (NCW) added depth to the discussions with their perspectives on legal rights, healthcare, rehabilitation, and human rights. A powerful moment was the involvement of former sex workers who courageously shared their inspiring stories of resilience and transformation. As part of the “WePower” Initiative, an exhibition showcased handmade jewellery and bags crafted by these women, symbolizing their journey toward economic empowerment and self-sufficiency. The seminar served as a vital platform to uplift marginalized voices, combat stigma, and advocate for inclusive and sustainable social change.
